Top 8% Academic Ranking at TUM

2 min readJustin Lanfermann

I'm proud to have achieved top 8% academic performance in my Computer Science program at TUM, ranking 45th out of 625 students in my cohort. This recognition reflects consistent academic excellence across a comprehensive curriculum spanning algorithms, software engineering, mathematics, and systems design.

Academic Achievement

By the end of my third semester, I earned 94 credits with a GPA of 1.6 (German grading system), surpassing the expected 90 credits for the semester. This performance places me among the highest achievers in one of Germany's most competitive computer science programs. The ranking methodology considers all graded examination performances, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of academic competency across diverse technical subjects.

Competitive Context

The achievement is particularly meaningful given the program's selectivity and rigor. Our cohort began with 765 students in the 2023/24 winter semester, with 625 students actively progressing through their third semester. Maintaining top 8% performance in such a competitive environment demonstrates both technical aptitude and consistent dedication to academic excellence across challenging coursework in theoretical computer science, practical programming, and mathematical foundations.

Future Goals

This achievement is a significant milestone that propels me toward my goal of specializing in machine learning and software architecture. The rigorous foundation in algorithms, data structures, and systems design at TUM is the ideal springboard for tackling complex challenges in these fields. I am eager to apply this academic foundation to real-world problems and contribute to the development of intelligent, scalable systems.
